Airpods causing echo for people I talk to...

I am using the new Iphone Xs and just bought some Airpods, People I talk to complain of an echo, they hear everything they say repeated back. I called Apple support and they were exactly zero help. Their suggestion was to wait for the new version of the Airpods, Airpods 2?, to come out and that should fix my issue. Which is not a fix, just me spending more money in hopes that the new Airpods fix my issue. I have tried unpairing and repairing the airpods. As far as I know the firmware for the airpods is up to date, but I am not really sure how to check to make sure there is no firmware update. The Iphone has no updates pending so I am at a total loss as to what to do. Apple support person I spoke with said she has had this complaint before but she could not say whether Apple was working on the issue and if it is even a wide spread issue.

Anyone else having this issue? and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
