HDMI to MacBook Pro TouchBar

good evening to all, I have a macbook pro 15-inch touchbar and I do not know why when I connect the external monitor via an HDMI cable with a doc that I camped on amazon and down the main monitor goes into stop, why? do I have to have a monitor with usb input c?

The following link is a great resource to determine which adapters you'd need for this: Adapters for the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or USB-C port on your Mac or iPad Pro. Based on this link, since you're using an HDMI cable with the monitor, you'd need either this Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter or a similar third-party USB-C to HDMI adapter/cable.
