Repair Permissions in Mojave 10.14.2 for attached hard drives

Somehow, I'm no longer able to write to my two external hard drives (a Passport and a WD32). The utility icon is grayed out so I can't change permissions, even if I unlock them.

I also have an issue trying to add a mp.3 to iTunes, which gives an error message that it can't access the Passport.

The Disk Utility First Aid is also grayed out for both drives. :-(

Thanks.

And, what does Disk Utility tell you about the state of the drive? Are you selecting the volume for repair or the drive's physical entry for First Aid? If the volume cannot be selected and repaired then the drive may require reformatting or replacing. This is commonly what it means when you no longer can write to the drive.

There is no longer any need to repair permissions when using Mojave.

Repair the Drive for El Capitan or Later

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

I'm sorry but your answer doesn't solve my issue. I am running Mojave 10.14.2. I'm not attempting to solve an internal Macintosh HD issue.

I cannot unlock my external hard drives connected via USB to be able to write to them. I can only read what's already stored on them. This was not the case when I first attached them to the computer.

I don't have permission, according to my iMac, to change their settings. Trying to make changes by clicking on the drives' utility button can't be done because it's grayed out. If I go into Disk Utility and select those drives, the First Aid button is grayed out leaving me no way to fix the issue.

Thanks
