Cannot sync with itunes

I have a macbook air and a 7+ iphone. I cannot sync my phone to my itunes. The instructions says to click on the phone icon to the right of the Music dropdown on the left of the itunes screen. I do not have a phone icon. When I go to my Devices under File, all devices are grayed out. How can I correct this problem?
