Malwarebytes and Mac Cleanup Pro

A friend has been getting some alarming messages on her Mac suggesting she has a virus.

This message is in French because we live in France, though neither of us are French:

“Detecté un virus de type ‘trojan’ (e.tre456_worm_osx) - virus tap snake; CronDNS; Dubfishicv."
and then
“téléchargement requis application Mac Cleanup Pro - note 9.9/10 Prix - gratuit”

She wants to know if this is something serious and whether she should travel the 70km to our nearest Apple seller. I am inclined to say that is a nasty sales pitch by Mac Cleanup Pro and that she should get rid of the program asap. Am I right or should she get into her car?

Surfing around, it seems that one of the things to do is to download and run Malwarebytes. But how do I know this is safe and efficient - and not another PUA?!

Yes, there are no "viruses" for Mac OS so she'd never get a legitimate message about that. It sounds like some kind of popup or adware she may have picked up.

Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key. If you still have problems Empty Caches (Safari menu > Preferences > Privacy > Remove all website data. (This will also remove history if you do not want to remove History open Safari Preferences > Advanced and check mark “Show Develop Menu” then choose “Empty Caches” from Develop Menu ).

Then go to Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions and check there. If there is an extension delete it.

If the problem persists then download and run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes is used by Apple Support folks and was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.

Of course, if you then revisit the site that is generating the pop-ups they will return.
