Paired headphones do not appear as an output sound device

Hi, my Sony MDR-1000X headphones are listed as paired and connected under the bluetooth tab on my iMac (late 2013) running High Sierra 10.13.6 but they do not appear as an output device in the sound control panel. They used to work fine. Perhaps it is the recent upgrade to 10.13.6. Can anyone suggest how I can add these headphones as an output device. Thanks

Hello rod194,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that your Sony Bluetooth headphones are not appearing as a device for sound output in the System Preferences on your iMac. I would be happy to provide some troubleshooting steps for this behavior.

Let's start by removing the headphones as a Bluetooth device on your iMac:

  1. Choose the Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
  2. Hover the pointer over the name of your headphones, then click the "X" button that appears next to the name.

Next, place the headphones in pairing mode again and connect them to your iMac:

If you encounter an issue pairing the headphones, you may want to consider resetting them:

Let us know what happens from here.

Cheers!
