The FaceTime video chat icon is grayed out in the messages app. I did not change any of my settings and the icon is like that for all of my contacts. Even the contacts that have iPhones. Someone please help.

I see you've noticed that the FaceTime option is greyed out within Messages. I'd be happy to look further into what may be happening with you.

Still waiting for Apple to fix problem through IOS update or something else. ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS PROBLEM: IF YOU HAVEN'T CALLED APPLE TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND CREATE A SERVICE TICKET, PLEASE DO, SO THAT THEY REALIZE THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT.
Yes David I had read this thread and also downloaded the IOS 12.1.3 too and as you said it did not resolve the issue. My iPad does not have ithis issue but my iPhone does. I am frustrated. I did report this to apple Support.
I can’t complain to apple because I bought this phone off my friend I am not covered to complain to them they said I have to be covered I don’t no I’ll bring the phone to shop to marrow my husband friend he works in phone shop he might be able to fix
Add my wife to the list. I don’t have the problem on my XR, but her 6 does. It seems like the problem is related to the 6, or at least most (all?) of the people who have the problem seem to also have a 6.

I have an iPhone 6 plus.
As of iOS 12.1.4, still have the same issue.
However, I just saw iOS 12.2 released as of 3/27/2019 sitting and waiting to be updated. Can't do it now because I need to be on WIFI to do the 700+ mb update, hopefully iOS 12.2 will end this issue!!!!
What happened to resolving this greyed-out FT issue? I have a 5S and have had the same issue. I can recv FT but can't make a FT video call from the text thread. I've tried the suggestions I've seen: Toggle on/off/; Reset; updated; no restrictions, etc. Still nothing.

Well Updated all and guess what. Still doesn't work. To boot now rest of family iphones and ipads which previous worked not show the same issue. So the updates broke or added a bug to the imessage app.
Most likely nothing. The iPhone 6 will no longer be supported. Perhaps the 6+ will see some resolution. At this point i'm not holding my breath. By the way I also updated to 12.4 still same issue. No fix.
I am on 12.1.2 on Sprint.
Yes, I am able to call from the FaceTime app and have the latest update on my iPhone. I just cannot make video calls from the Messages app.
What iOS is everyone one? I'm on 12.1.2. My wife's phone as well as my kids are on 12.1 their icons in message is working properly.
12.1.2 been at that for a little while, this issue just started for me today
Also before the Specialist chime in. No amount of signing in or out,of iCloud or Message or Facetime helps. Nor rebooting or resetting network settings, helped either.
Same problem starting today using a THC and the latest iOS. FaceTime working when used directly but grayed out in text messaging option
