Unexplained volume change on software instrument track

Hi there, I'm reasonably new to Logic Pro X having recently migrated from GarageBand. Please see screenshots below of the same Piccolo track at different playhead positions. I've showed Automation to illustrate that the volume level is consistent throughout at -7 dB.

For reasons that I can't understand the actual volume for the track resets to -23 dB as soon as the instrument starts at bar 6. If I try to change it using the volume spinner, it just goes back to -23 dB.

What am I missing? I've disabled the EXS24 but that made no difference. Ideas would be much appreciated.

I have solved the problem. I discovered that apart from the track automation there's also midi automation on the piano roll view. Not sure how that got there, and it wasn't showing by default until I pressed A while in the piano roll panel, but I guess I must have put it there by accident. Anyway deleting this fixed it.

Some more info on this.

I created a new software instrument track and copied and pasted the midi data from the first track into the second.

However the issue happens with the second track as well. So I think it must be related to the midi data somehow.

I tried changing the patch from piccolo to another instrument and still have the same issue.

I extended the first note to the beginning of the song and it still happens at bar 6.

Very weird.
