Microphone connecting to GarageBand, but not providing high volume or quality audio

I am currently using a SHURE SM58 Dynamic Microphone and have recently purchased a 3-pin XLR to USB cable to connect it to my MacBook Pro.

I opened System Preferences and selected the USB Audio Device in Sound > Input but have found that when I open GarageBand and select the Microphone, little to no audio goes through and I'm literally yelling into the microphone, only to faintly hear my voice when I play the track back to myself with the Mac's master volume set to the highest it can possibly be.

What should I do??

MacBook Air (2018 or later)

This might sound dumb, but you do have the "record level" slider in the "smart controls" "recording settings" all the way up, right?

Also, are you monitoring on headphones and if so is the level too low there. Are the waveforms of the tracks really small? Sounds like you're not getting full input volume. Have you fiddled with the Audio MIDI Setup Utility in the Utilities folder?
