Digital artist : iPad pro vs XP-Pen Artist 12 ??

So I’m basically totally new to digital art - I’ve used photoshop minimally on my laptop and I’ve done a couple of pieces on my old iPad using Adobe Draw, so I want to really get into it. I’m an art student, so the price of the tablets isn’t something I’m worried about as I know it won’t be a waste and that I’ll enjoy it!

With the research I’ve done, the main tablets in a reasonable price range seem to be the iPad Pro and Apple pencil vs the XP-Pen Artist 12 ( https://www.xp-pen.com/goods/show/id/380.html ) or any other wacom tablets you can recommend me! . Can anyone give me any advice on what would be best? I’m really quite clueless as I can’t tell which ones are best for making art in a non professional environment. Thanks!

Well, you do not seem bothered/deterrred by cost/finances for these devices.

XP-Pen and most Wacom tablets are either graphic drawing tablets that use NO built-in visual display or graphics display drawing tablets that have a built-in drawing display that work in conjunction with a regular, conventional laptop /desktop computer.

Those, like from XP-Pen, Huawei and other Wacom tablet competitors need a regular computer with these for these to work

In addition these types of drawing tablets need a stylus to work. They do not work with touch.

Wacom is the GOLD STANDARD and most expensive for all drawing tablets and their portable self contained touch/pen tablet devices.

Wacom’s Cintiq visual graphic display drawing tablets start at $800 for the smallest 13 inch display graphics drawing tablet and move all the way up to $3500 for a huge 32 inch drawing display.

Competitors to Wacom are cheaper.

Even Dell has gotten into the game with their 27 inch screen Dell Canvas graphic display drawing tablet.

https://www.dell.com/en-us/wohttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface#PRO_6_PANEL

All of these need powerful computers for these graphics drawing tablets to work well.

So, you need to read the specs on minimum and maximum laptop/desktop computer requirements to use all of the above.

The above drawing tablet devices are not stand alone, mobile tablets like the iPad or Microsoft Surface Pro line of portable touch screen tablet computers with their own self contained software ( iOS or Windows mobile and/or full Windows )and power supplies and Google Android-based tablets, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Wacom has their own stand alone touch and pen-based portable drawing tablets, but like all of Wacom’s products, it is THE MOST EXPENSIVE OF THE LOT.

The new 2018, 3rd gen, 11 and 12.9 inch iPad Pro are the Flagship Apple iPad that uses the new Apple Pencil 2 and has every premium iPad feature.

iPad Pro - Apple

Apple also, still sell its last generation 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro that uses the 1st gen, original Apple Pencil.

The older 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro is no slouch and has many of the same premium iPad Pro features, as well.

iPad Pro (10.5-inch) - Technical Specifications

There is also the much cheaper 2018, 6th gen 9.7 inch iPad Pro that uses the original 1st gen Apple Pencil.

iPad 9.7-inch - Apple

Apple Pencils and external covers/keyboard covers are an extra purchase.

If one of your requirements for a tablet computer are wireless Bluetooth mice, trackpads or trackballs, NO Apple iPad has EVER had native support for these input devices.

They are non-existant on an iPad.

So, if these input devices are important to you, then an iPad/iPad Pro may NOT be for you.

Microsoft mobile Surface products supoort Bluetooth mice, trackpads and its own creative Surface Dial.

So, you need to decide which direction you want to go.

Display graphic drawing tablets tied to a powerful computer

OR

Self contained mobile tablet computers with both touch and pen input that are extremely portable and flexible.

Good Luck to You!

You mentioned a non-professional environment.

So, with Wacom, their larger computer-based display drawing tablets will probably be way out of your budget.

Wacom portable mobile tablet offerings may or may not be out of your budget, especially for their smaller 13 inch screen Wacom Cintiq Mobile Pro.

So, for self contained, self powered mobile tablet computers, it's really decisions between Apple iPad/iPad Pro mobile tablets VS Windows-based Microsoft Surface Pro line up or the Surface GO mobile tablets VS a Google Android operating system-based mobile tablet of which the Samsung Galaxy Tab line is the best of class of those mobile tablets.

Once, again, Good Luck to You!

As a 1st gen iPad Pro user with an older larger Wacom Intuos 9“ x 12” graphics tablet tied to my older Apple iMac, I am not trying to push you toward an iPad/iPad Pro as, for some users we get lots of complaints from here, the iPad/iPad Pro may or may not be a good fit for you.

Some mobile tablet users really want both the mobile touch screen tablet abilities and full laptop capabilities .

That is what Microsoft offers.

Apple just offers the best in class tablet ONLY experience with some limited laptop-like capabilities.

If you can, go to both an Apple Store and a Microsoft Store or authorised Microsoft dealer/seller/retailer that sell their mobile Surface products and I implore you to try out these devices in person, in these stores, first.

There seems to be an equal amount of iPad/iPad Pro AND Microsoft Surface product users.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but it depends on what you feel about the strengths and limitations of each brand device.

There are places that sell Wacom devices, but never have any setup to try and use in a retail store location.

So, those will be purchase and try at home and if you aren’t happy, returning the device.

Same goes for the XP-Pen display tablet you are interested in purchasing.

I forgot to mention that many of Wacom’s own graphics display drawing tablets, more or less, cater more to professional digital artists than to non-professionals.

FYI.
