keyboard probs MacBook Air, High Sierra 10.13.6

Booted up fresh last night and certain keys seem dead: I, U, K, a few others. Weird thing is, I can use these keys to sign in, just not once I get a desktop. Tried with a Bluetooth keyboard, same prob: so this is a SOFTWARE glitch, not a hardware problem. Safe boot, problem persists. Please help...

Yes, have tried several different keyboard alternatives, including English, Irish, ABC... all do the same thing. And the problem is weirder than simply missing keys: the cursor seems to leap backwards or ahead at random places. I noticed this time, with the keyboard viewer open, that the letters U and I not only wouldn’t type, they don’t highlight in the keyboard viewer the way the others do. Leads to very strange output like this:

Simply typing the word Eunice five times...
