Booted up fresh last night and certain keys seem dead: I, U, K, a few others. Weird thing is, I can use these keys to sign in, just not once I get a desktop. Tried with a Bluetooth keyboard, same prob: so this is a SOFTWARE glitch, not a hardware problem. Safe boot, problem persists. Please help...

I do think you're going to have to call them, I don't think it can be fixed without Admin rights, but have you tried another language keyboard? For US English there's actually 3 choices ... US, ABC/US Extended, & Unicode Hex Input...
Try resetting the SMC.

Yes I hooked up my bluetooth keyboard first thing, same problem... also did a safe boot, turned off Albert and Typeit4me plugins...

Yes, have tried several different keyboard alternatives, including English, Irish, ABC... all do the same thing. And the problem is weirder than simply missing keys: the cursor seems to leap backwards or ahead at random places. I noticed this time, with the keyboard viewer open, that the letters U and I not only wouldn’t type, they don’t highlight in the keyboard viewer the way the others do. Leads to very strange output like this:

Simply typing the word Eunice five times...
Changing keyboard type, problem persists. Keyboard viewer, using mouse, those problem keys work FINE. HM. Thanks for your assist... what’s next?
Can’t set up new user account, my college’s computer doesn’t give me admin privs to do that... might have to call them. GOod idea though. Other tips?
