external Apple CD/DVD player doesn't work

When I plug in my external Apple CD/DVD player into the USB port of my MAC laptop it acts dead. A CD put into slot does not automatically get taken in and seated internally. It acts dead. Is there some setting on my laptop I need to adjust? I've almost never used this external DVD/CD drive and bought it new.

Greetings Kenmorgen,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand your Apple USB SuperDrive isn't working as expected, as you mentioned it doesn't accept disks or seem to have power when connected with your MacBook Pro.

I suggest resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac, as described in the following support article: Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer

Let me know how it goes from here.

Kind regards.
