Bit rate 128bps or 256bps

Using iMac.

Most of the songs I have are 128bps, I have noticed that the music I purchase from iTunes is at a Bit rate of 256bps. Should I be changing my 128's to 256 ?

But in a nut shell the higher the bit rate the better the quality. Some codecs are better than others, AAC (mpeg4) is better than mp3. I can not tolerate 128kbps mp3, I prefer 192kbps mp3 which may be close to a 128 kbps AAC file. You can get much higher quality audio by choosing 128kbps AAC than the same bitrate mp3. I used to rip everything at 192kbps mp3, now I use 256 kbps AAC. I really can't tell the difference in quality between the 2 however since storage space is not as much of an issue as it used to be I choose the higher bitrate option. There may be some quality gained when using my higher end headphones, my ears can no longer tell the difference. Your milage may vary, only you can tell if the larger file sizes is going to give you the audio quality your ears need.
