I want to disable Top Hits, but am having trouble finding how or if possible. When I type anything in the address bar (outside of a legitimate address) and just hit enter, I want the default search engines results. I don't want any loading of a top hit result.

To remove Top Hits, you have to clear all history.
To remove a website from Top Hits:
Click "History" in Safari menu bar and then "Show All History".
In the search bar at the top right corner enter the name of the website.
When all entries show up, select all and then delete all.
When you enter a search in the search bar next time, the site name/url will not be autocompleted.
As a test, try using another search engine and see if the same thing happens.
Already did that, everything unchecked does not solve the problem.

Thanks, but that gets to the conclusion I was coming to. You really can't keep the history, and only use the address bar for searching when entering terms vs websites. Have gone to using Chrome now
Try Safari/Preferences/Search/Smart Search Field and uncheck Preload Top in the Background. If that doesn't work, experiment with unchecking the other options there.
