Granted, I am new to the iPhone but you'd think this would be simple enough.
I set my ringtone for the phone and it automatically set the FaceTime ringtone to the same thing. Is there no way to separate the two?
I must be looking past it. Some guidance would be great.

As you peruse Settings > Sounds & Haptics, you will see there is a "Ringtone" setting. There is no unique setting for "FaceTime".
So no, you have not overlooked anything. FaceTime ringtones are the same as a cellular telephone call.
