Macbook speakers: at medium volume I hear a pop and right speaker stops working

Whenever I watch a youtube video/listen to music or anything that doesn't require earphones I use the inbuilt speakers for audio.

At low volumes (up to 40% using the touchbar) I have perfect audio from both speakers. However, once I surpass 40% I hear a quiet pop and the right speaker goes completely dead with the left speaker comfortably churning out audio at even high volumes. Now if I "rest" the speaker for about 5 mins or so the audio returns to the right speaker - without fiddling with any settings or moving the macbook about other than lowering the volume before playing a video/music.

I've been able to consistently replicate the issue and find that the sound returns if I wait a few minutes. Is there a way to fix this as it seems the right speaker has some sort of threshold and then dies out?

Any help would be greatly welcomed.
