Applications launch by themselves

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) (Mojave 10.14.2): random applications (iTunes, Messages, Outlook for Mac, or new windows in Chrome) launch. Does not seem to happen in Safe Mode. Very random, I don't know how to re-create it.

Macbook (2015 or later)

Hi,

Possible reason one

When you shut down the Computer the window that pops up says that the computer will restart Apps that have open windows when you shut the computer down. It is a check box.

Also some apps like Messages can have many windows open and dismissing them using the red blob top left of a window does not close/quit the app concerned.

This may lead to some apps still running even if all the windows have been closed/hidden.

This stems from when Messages could join the AIM, Yahoo, Bonjour and many Jabber servers and have Buddy list(s).

It used to have a File Transfer window you could also display and it will also treat the Preferences window the same way.

I don't use Chrome but if it is like many other browsers it can open new pages in tabs or in separate windows.

Add to that apps in Full Screen mode out of sight on separate "panes" of the Desktop you might not see all the open windows before Shutting down the computer.

Safe Mode tends to override whether the system retains the info about which apps to reopen on start up.

Possible Reason two

In System Preferences > Users and Groups > you account and the Login Items button on the right.

This holds a list of item to be started up on the Computer Start up.

Some of these you may have been asked about when you installed the app as to whether you wanted this.

Other apps sometimes ask when you go to Quit them.

There are other that never ask you but are there anyway.

Use the "-" minus icon to remove those that you don't want.

Again Safe Mode will tend to ignore this list.

You have not said when these apps launch and I have tended to think about how they do so on Start up as it is a Laptop.

If they are at other times you will have to let us know.
