My AppleTV won’t power my TCL TV back on

My ATV will power off my TCL Roku TV when I put it to sleep. But it won’t power the TV back on. Any suggestions?

(After fruitlessly reaching out to TCL support and Apple support and much Googling, I finally got the AppleTV remote to control the TV’s volume!)

Just to let you know that, thanks to a senior advisor at Apple, I've resolved the issue. The solution is not only totally unintuitive, it plain doesn't make any sense. But it works!

This works for a TCL Roku 55R617; of course, I can't guarantee that it will work with other models.

Settings>System>Control Other Devices (CEC): Check all available boxes under that setting (ARC, System Audio Control, 1-touch play, System standby). Only when all four were checked off would the Apple TV remote power the TCL on and off.

That is incorrect. It has nothing to do with Apple, and if that is what they are saying that is purely to give you the runaround.

It is an issue with how CEC functions on their TV. Each manufacturer has their own implementation. CEC exists not only to pair with remote controls but also to communicate between devices (i.e. switch on Apple TV, also power on TV and switch inputs).

CEC is merely a protocol that Apple TV accesses, the same could occur no matter what device you had connected to your TV.

Roku is simply the smart TV platform running on the TV. Whether a TV is smart or not has no bearing on how Apple TV functions.

The iPhone app works over Wifi.

To solve the volume control issue, I had to get the Apple TV to "learn a new remote," using the TV remote. That way, the Apple TV would "learn" the necessary coding from the TV remote. However, because the Apple TV relies on IR for volume control and the TV remote reverts to IR (from wifi) only when its battery is low, I had to remove/replace one of the TV remote batteries to catch the couple of seconds when the TV remote "thought" its battery was low. I had to do that twice -- once for "volume up" and once for "volume down." No one at Roku or Apple was aware of that workaround; I found it in an online forum! Which is why I'm here!

CEC definitely connects the two devices -- in theory. But it seems that the theory sometimes needs some serious tweaking for it to work in practice. I'm hoping to discover something similar to solve the "power on" issue. Worst case, I can use the Roku Remote app on my phone to power up the TV. But it sure would be nice to find a fix.

They will say that if it’s a problem with how the Apple TV interacts with their TV, it’s either an Apple issue, which they have no control over, or it’s because Roku and Apple TV are competitors. 😬 As far as they’re concerned, CEC exists only to make sure their remote functions properly with their TV. 🙄 At least the Roku iPhone app can power the TV back on, should no other fix make itself known. Thanks anyhow.

Thanks, but for better or worse, the TV’s software is up to date and Roku support inevitably refers me back to Apple.

What I’m discovering is that a TCL Roku TV doesn’t always play nice/seamlessly with AppleTV. My experience with volume control is a perfect example. After much online research, I found a way to get that to work. I’m hoping for similar help with the “power on” issue (power off works just fine).

It was a TV setting and one that makes no logical sense, at least according the manufacturer's description of what each of those settings does. Although I had Googled the **** out of the issue, it was the Apple advisor who found the solution on a Reddit forum.

Although you didn't have a solution for me, I appreciate that you reached out. Thanks!
