battery status not updating

i have a 2017 macbook pro with mojave and the battery status on the menu bar does not update. ive tried updating the software and restarting the laptop, but neither works.

if i plug in the charger, it would ding indicating that the laptop is being charged but the little icon does not change to the charging icon. it only updates when i click it to 'show percentage'. the same happens when i unplug it. the icon stays as the charging icon until i toggle 'show percentage'.

in addition, the percentage doesn't update unless i do the same thing. its frustrating because now im constantly never sure how much battery i have left.
