Mouse cursor disappears

Hey all,

I have a new Macbook pro 2018 model; 2months old. A week ago the cursor started to disappear randomly from the screen, especially when I am using full screen mode or adding another monitor. The only way to make it appear again is to right click in a blank area. Is there any way to fix that?

Thanks!

Hello elina7,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you're finding your cursor seems to intermittently disappear.

For confirmation, has this ever happened when you're not using full screen mode or another monitor? Or only under those circumstances?

I'm wondering if the cursor may actually be moving on its own rather than disappearing; I recommend starting by trying these steps to help rule that out, including testing in safe mode: If your pointer is jumpy when you use a trackpad, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse.

As another test, I recommend clicking Apple menu () > System Preferences > Accessibility, and then clicking Display in the left-hand column. Then, check the box next to "Shake mouse pointer to locate." The next time the cursor disappears, try moving your trackpad or mouse back and forth quickly to see if the cursor appears without needing to right-click. Knowing how this works would help narrow things down a bit.

I hope this gets you started!

Take care.

Hi elina7,

We appreciate your follow-up information.

Based on your description, I recommend testing this in a temporary administrator account. The results of this test will tell you if the issue is system-wide, or user-specific. Here's How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. Once you create the test account, log in there and try to replicate the issue. Depending on the results, you'll find some additional steps in the link above that may help!

Kind regards.

Hello sarah_s1,

and thanks for the reply. I dont know what the problem of the cursor is, but I am pretty sure it is not moving on its own because I can right click and see where the cursor is and it is following my flow of movement. To answer your question, it has happened other times as well, for example, when I pressed shut down and the window to shut down appeared the cursor disappeared again. When I click shift+tab and change to another program it was appearing again and then disappearing when I was moving back to the shut down window. Hope this helped.

Cheers!
