My Moms new IPhone XR won’t read SIMs csrd

I bought my mom a new iPhone XR for Christmas. She has never owned a smart phone and still uses a flip phone. I got her the phone so that she could use it as a glorified iPod Touch in case she wasn’t ready for a full iPhone.

i bought the 128gb iPhone XR from bestbuy without a plan or carrier.

As with all iPhones, you now need a SIMs card to start the device. I put my AT&T SIMs card in to get her set up. I then took out to go back into my phone.

She he has been doing great with the iPhone just connecting to WiFi and taking pictures.

Today she went to the Verizon store to actually set up the iPhone for service and calls. They tried putting in a new SIMs card but it wouldn’t work and gave an error saying it can’t read the card. They tried multiple cards but none would work.

Whats my solution. Did I mess something up by using my SIMs card to start the phone or are the workers at Verizon doing something wrong?

Greetings Pshursey,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand you're unable to activate service on the new iPhone you purchased for your mother, as you mentioned the iPhone isn't reading the SIM card.

The following support article provides helpful activation information if you're receiving a "SIM not supported" alert: If you can't activate your iPhone

Additional troubleshooting suggestions can be found within the following support article: If you get an alert about the SIM card in your iPhone

If additional assistance is needed, it would be helpful if you confirm if the iPhone was able to activate when you used your SIM card, and what the SIM alert message states when other SIM cards are used.

Kind regards.
