back up mac

I was trying to back-up my files again after one week through my external hard drive but Time Capsule said there was an error. Suggested to re-format my external hard drive. Was wondering how to first copy the back up files and was trying to do so on my current mac (I guess that does not work).

I was wondering how I can back-up before reformatting my external hard drive which is my back up drive.
