How do I backup my mac using time machine without deleting the existing files on my external hard drive?
Each time I try to back up my Mac to an external hard drive, it asks if it is okay to erase the backup disk.

What format is the drive? Maybe Time Machine is asking to erase and format the drive to its required format.

Time Machine should not erase your existing files. That said it's best to use a dedicated drive or partition for TM storage.
