Iphone is not making sounds when receiving texts since it has been paired with Apple watch

Although the response was informative, it didn't answer my question. Since my phone has been paired with the watch, I do not have any notification sounds telling me that I have received a text. And when I first got the watch, it did indeed get notifications as well as the phone, and it would ping. Now both are silent. Did I inadvertently turn something off. This is annoying because I have to constantly check to see if there is anything I should respond to.
