iPhone won't alert new messages with Apple Watch connected

I recently got an Apple Watch, but I've noticed that when I get a new text message, I get the vibration on my Watch, but my phone doesn't alert me at all, either on the screen or with a sound/vibration. I'd really like both to alert me, in case I don't notice one or the other. Is there a setting I need to change on my phone or the watch?
