Extending apple time capsule wifi

I have an apple TC as my main router. what is the best way to extend the signal? Can I add a mesh system like Orbi?

Best way and by far the easiest way to extend a Time Capsule network would be to use another Apple router like an AirPort Extreme.......if you can find one.

For best performance, plan to connect the extender back to the TC using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. If you connect the AirPort Extreme using wireless only, expect to lose about half of the potential speed on the WiFi network.

If you are looking at mesh systems, plan to install and set up the mesh system to your modem. Then, you can connect the Time Capsule to the mesh system router and use the Time Capsule for backups and data storage.

While the Time Capsule can still produce a wireless network in this type of setup, it would probably make no sense to use it unless you want to have a separate WiFi network for "guests" to use when they visit.

Stated another way if you are looking at mesh systems........the mesh system will provide your wireless service. The Time Capsule becomes a backup or storage device that connects to the mesh router.

Yes, but it works better if you use the Orbi as your main router and swap the TC to backup duty only.

Mesh systems do not mesh with older standard wifi.. You can configure the Orbi router to bridge.. and plugged into the TC which is still your main router.. however this is unlikely to be a great layout.

Do you use the TC for Time Machine backup now?

What model is it?

can I still do that if i have the TC as a backup attached to the Orbi?

Yes, as we noted above. The TC will continue to function as it does now. The only real change will be using the Orbi WiFi rather than the Time Capsule WiFi.

Keep in mind that best performance with the Orbi mesh system will be when you have all of the Orbi WiFi devices connected together using an Ethernet connection.

While it is possible to use WiFi between the Orbi devices, this type of setup will result in a significant performance loss.......the same issue as when you try to "extend" AirPorts using only a wireless connection.

If you will review my response above, I believe that I already answered that question for you. Here it is again:

We went on to further explain that if you opt for a mesh system, you will not be extending the Time Capsule network with the mesh system. The mesh system will replace your current WiFi system, and the Time Capsule will be used as a backup and storage device.

So, you need to decide on whether you want to extend the Time Capsule network with another Apple router like an AirPort Extreme or whether you want to replace your current WiFi network with a mesh system.

Further, we noted that no matter whether you choose to add another AirPort......or.....opt for a mesh system that the best performance will always be attained when you connect the AirPorts, or the mesh system access points together using a wired Ethernet cable connection.

So, you have another decision to make as well no matter which way you go. That is whether you will connect the WiFi devices to each other using an Ethernet cable connection......or.....whether you want to try to use wireless to connect the WiFi devices to each other. One method.....wired......is much better than the other in terms of performance.
