Transitioning Apple Music to Family

Currently I have an individual Apple Music subscription paid through my mobile phone contract through EE (UK) and want to upgrade to a family subscription.

Initially EE said to just upgrade via the phone as they can’t do family accounts but the phone doesn’t let me upgrade the account because it’s paid via the phone contract. Now EE say I should cancel Apple Music via them an sign up afresh through Apple.

is this the right way to do it?

Will playlists be retained during the cancel/resubscribe dance?

Will uploaded iCloud Music Library tracks be retained in the transition?

Also will uploaded iCloud Music Library tracks be available to all family members?

The second advise from EE is the right way to do it. You should cancel with them and resubscribe directly with Apple. There may be some time between cancelation and expiration of the subscription.

If the time between the subscriptions is short, then the iCloud Music Library should be intact and linked to your Apple ID. When you cancel, the downloads as part of the subscription will be lost, but the library listing will come back when you re-subscribe.

The family members will get their own iCloud Music Library, linked to their own Apple ID, fully independent from yours for content. If you want to let each other know about certain music, then you can share playlists.

First set up the Family Sharing group, then get the Apple Music Family subscription as family organizer.
