lsd process is consuming over 1GB of memory. Any idea why and how to reduce it?

Hi

I'm using a 2012 MacMini with 16GB of RAM, 2.5GHz i5. Running Mojave

I have noticed the process LSD gradually increasing memory usage, now up 1GB from a restart last night.

Any ideas why and how to reduce it?

On my 2017 iMac, also running Mojave, the same process only consumes 80MB and stays around there. Also on another MacBookPro, also 2017 running Mojave, LSD consumes 9.2MB.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't really want to reinstall Mojave if I don't need to.

You may want to rebuild the Launch Services database.

Paste the following (one single line) into a Terminal window, and press return:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

If it does not fix it, please run Etrecheck and post its report here. There are probably other software causes, which the report may illuminate.

Tried that, then rebooted. LSD is now consuming 190MB, so it's a big improvement so far. I shall have to wait and see to see if it increases.

I think this only started happening after the last Mojave update, but didn't seem to effect my other Mac's.

Forgot to say Thank you for your help and your continued help.

LSD was holding steady at 190MB, now shot up to 1.2GB shortly after I started playing a x265 video on Plex on my appleTV.

Don't know if that's related.

I don't know if it is related to a number of applications that you have, and which I am not very familiar with.

Also, the fact that you have so many hard drives connected simultaneously may play a role in this.

You also have many login items, which means these things probably are running all the time.

They do not seem to have a direct bearing on launch services.

Thanks for your reply.

I use this machine as my media server and backup server, so it's on 24/7 and has many hard drives connected to it and all the login items. It has been rock solid for the last 2 years, and still is.

I will keep an eye on the LSD process (or just not look at activity monitor). It doesn't seem to affect memory pressure, so I'm inclined to think it's some sort of cache.
