Cannot set up auto-unlock my macbook with my apple watch

followed the above steps, confirmed that my macbook supports auto-unlock and I updated my software (running macOS Sierra version 10.12.6). Two-factor is turned on and all my devices are connected to the same wifi. When I go to click "allow your apple watch to unlock your mac" i get the following error:

My software is up to date and I restarted my computer twice already. What am I missing?

EDIT: nevermind my software didn't update- updating now!

Have you tried updating the watchOS version on your Apple Watch and the iOS version on your iPhone

turns out my macbook didn't update properly. updating it right now.
