iPhone texts not showing name of sender

This was discussed previously, but there were no real answers to solve the issue.

I noticed i was getting group texts from someone that included other people who are all in my contacts. However, most of the texts only showed up with a phone number and did not show the names of the senders. Also, when I replied, I got a duplicate text of my reply that I “received” as if someone else sent it with the sender being identified as my phone number.

I raised the issue in the group text and no one else in the group was having the issue.

Then the same thing happened, but this time it was an individual text from a another friend also in my contacts. Only her phone number appeared and not her name. When I replied, I also got the duplicate text of my reply showing it was sent from my number.

So so I started playing around and looking for reasons for this. One thing I noticed was that my number was listed as one of the intended recipients. It’s as if my phone isn’t recognizing it’s own number and thinks it’s someone else in the group.

I also noted some of the members of the group text were recognized and showed the appropriate names from my contacts whereas most were not - and only showed the phone number.

When I looked for differences between those recognized and those not, I noticed the numbers that showed up when a new text came in did not have a “1” before the area code. I went and checked my contacts and found I had them entered in with the 1 first. When I edited the contact and deleted the 1, I went back to the texts and now their appropriate name was displayed and not just a number. I also reverse checked and found that the people who’s texts were already recognized and displayed by name were people who’s phone numbers were already entered in my phone without the prefixed “1” before their number.

So this trick seemed to sort of solve the issue, but it’s weird that I’ve never had the problem before.

The other odd thing is my iPhone still shows my own number as an included part of the group text but it’s still not recognized as being me, and replies to the text group still result in my normal outgoing sent text being immediately followed up by a new duplicate incoming text that lists the “sender”’ by my phone number (area code and 7 digit number without a 1 preceding the area code). I don’t know how to fix that part because my own cell phone number is not in my contacts and I believe only appears in my settings where you can look at it.

I’m currently on IOS v 12.0.1 and update to 12.1.2 is available. I will update today, but unsure if that’s gonna be the fix.

Anyone else seeing this issue?
