bluetooth not finfding my iwatch

i'm having issues with my bluetooth connectivity with my iwatch. i switched off bluetooth then restarted my iphone but to avail. my son tells me this may have caused when a recent iOS update was activated. it started when i switched my phone to airplane mode but when i turned it back on again, my phone can't find my watch in range?
