"A software update is required to connect to your iOS device."

I'm getting this message on my MacBook Pro after updating my iPhone 7 to iOS 12.1.2:

"A software update is required to connect to your iOS device. Would you like to download and install this update now?"

Does 'software update' mean updating my whole OS or something less involved? If I have to advance to Mojave (my laptop is mid-2010), then I'd wish they'd say this specifically.

Thanks.

Hi Sterling,

Thanks for your reply. I did / do understand that downloading the software is what's needed to let the laptop connect to the phone. The outstanding question for me is 'what' is this software? Is it just some kind of patch or small update OR is it actually going to advance my OS to the next version? If the latter, then this fix may end up causing other problems. Bottomline, would just appreciate a little more clarity and specificity from Apple on what they want me to put into my computer.

Thanks again for your response.
