Mac mini 2018: No display on wake some of the time

I've got a Mac mini 2018 hooked up via USB-C to a LG MU88W, which works great 95% of the time.

However, maybe 1 in 20 wake ups from system sleep initiate a monitor wake up (i.e. the monitor gets a signal from the Mac mini telling it to come out of the monitor's sleep mode), but no image is ever displayed. The Mac mini has actually turned on (it even accepts keyboard input! I can restart it with a command if needed) but simply is not connecting to the display.

I've restarted the display, unplugged and replugged the USB-C connection, etc. The only fix I've found so far is restarting the Mac mini.

What can I do to fix or diagnose this?

Mac mini 2018 or later

Same/similar issue, different display, worse wake from sleep failure rate, but easier recovery (on my setup cycling monitor power works.) My issue is present on both direct HDMI connection and indirect eGPU connections.

The only persistent 'fix' I've found is to go to Energy Preferences and select 'Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is off.' After all if computer never has to wake up you never after to worry about wake from sleep issues.
