Sporadic dial tone on iPhone X

Recently, when I call someone from my phone, I've noticed that the dial tone goes haywire every so often. Instead of the usual regular 'chirps' I get a very drawn out irregular set, then they speed up but with a random 'cough' noise after each set. Then it goes intermittent and then it's hit & miss if the call connects or not. Sometimes, if it does, I can hear the person I've called but they can't hear me.


is this a fault with my phone or the network I am on?

Thanks for that follow-up information. Were you able to verify your iPhone is updated along with your carrier settings? That may be helpful in resolving the issue.


Also, to double-check, were you able to get in contact with your wireless carrier? If you've completed all of the steps in the article below, short of restoring the device, that would be your next best step: If you can't make or receive calls on your iPhone.

You mentioned this happens intermittently. How often would you say it happens? Does it happen when you're in a particular area? How about when you're on Wi-Fi as opposed to cellular data?

We appreciate that follow-up information. Knowing that the issue happens on both cellular and Wi-Fi is helpful. In your first message, you mentioned that it's hit or miss if the call connects. When it doesn't connect, what exactly happens? Do you get any "call failed" alerts, or other messages?


Are you using iOS 12.1.2 under Settings > General > About? If not, I recommend updating as a next step: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. After updating, or if you're already updated, it's a good idea to double-check for any carrier updates as well: Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad.
