OSX update from Yosemite 10.10.5 to El Capitan

What can I be doing wrong?

So I've got MacBook Pro 15", mid 2012, Model No. A1286, running Yosemite 10.10.5

Wanted to start updating to new OSX versions, starting from El Capitan. But, after opening a download page of this OS in App Store, and clicking "GET" button, i get a message:

"We could not complete your purchase.

This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer"

Button "Learn More" doesn't lead nowhere. Any ideas what's up?

The App Store is recognising that your Mac can upgrade further than El Capitan so is refusing to download and install it for you.

Your Mac can install Sierra.

It can also install High Sierra.

You should also be able to upgrade to Mojave.

You do not need to do step by step upgrades you could go directly to Mojave.

Whichever OS you decide to upgrade to make sure any third party apps you use have updates available so they will continue to operate in your chosen OS, check with the developers of any apps you have.

Also check with the manufacturers of any printers/ scanners or other hardware you use with you Mac that they have drivers and software available so they will continue to function.

And before upgrading make sure you have made a full back up of your Mac just in case something goes wrong.
