Time for a new, non-Apple router?

Several weeks ago my Airport Extreme began quitting. After a reboot, it would work fine for a while. After it quit twice in one day I did a hard reset and it worked fine for one week. Is there something else I could try to remedy this quitting, or is it time to get a new router? Thank you.

Cheers, Peter

No light = no power, so you have a power supply issue with the AirPort Extreme.

If you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs, then the AirPort Extreme is covered for up to 3 years from its purchase date, assuming that you are the original owner. The details are complicated, so you'll need to get with Apple Support if you think that the AirPort Extreme might be covered by AppleCare for a replacement device.

If you are a dedicated do-it-yourself type of person who loves a challenge, it is possible.....but difficult......to replace the AirPort Extreme power supply. A repair shop could probably do this for you as well, but the cost including labor would likely exceed $150.

The following article might provide few tips on how to take things apart and get them back together.

I think you simply need a new router..

If the airport extreme is >4-5years it is not worth repairing even for a DIY job..

Just buy a new non-Apple router.

I made some suggestions.

High end Asus models.. eg RT-AC88U RT-AC86U

Synology RT2600AC

Ubiquiti router and APs.. not cheap or easy but a lot of us are moving to these as more reliable than average domestic router.

Cheap end.. TP-Link like C3150v2 has excellent wireless.. but firmware is a little like the Airports.. nothing much possible.

Mesh routers are now popular.. they do a much better job of giving you good wireless over your house.. The Asus and Synology are both Mesh capable.. but if you want a mesh system Apple do sell (without support) Linksys Velop but do compare it to Netgear Orbi which I think is a more competent system.

We have better consumer protection laws in Australia.

Apple behave differently in different markets. Here they have come to the attention of consumer authorities any number of times for ignoring local regulations.

I really do not know what the situation in the US is like..

I have owned a number of Asus routers or bought for friends.. all are doing well.. I am running a much older one at the moment. RT-AC3200. Another model did have issues on my connection.. but it was a combo of ISP setup and a particularly poor installation. Technically I doubt you will have issues.. if their warranty issues preclude you buying them.. pick one of the other brands.

NOTE Apple routers have never worked on my connections.. They use PPPOE standard that does not comply with my ISP. I tried many version and many firmwares.. so all routers do give trouble on some connections. There are just too many flavours of internet connections out there. I also have used (and repaired) many of the Apple routers. Some of them were terrible.. the early Time Capsules were shockers and Apple refused repairs or replacement outside 12month warranty by even a few days and that was for a $400US product. Many died at 18months. They did finally extend warranty but only after most people had already disposed of them.

Applecare is an add on service.. which you pay for.. and it reflects in the cost of the products.. certainly Apple have phone support etc in US. They are not so great here. Note that Applecare has never been available for purchase on apple routers.. but they were covered as periphrals on computer, iPads and Apple TV.. although the rules changed a fair bit.

Ubiquiti is a US company and I am very happy with products. If you are prepared to learn the interface and systems then they work very well.

Synology is also a good option to try but you will need to check their US situation. They should have a big presence as they sell large numbers of NAS devices for which they are better known.

Certainly in terms of firmware advancement the products I listed are far ahead of the average. Plus working with Apple functions like bonjour.. which not all routers handle at all well.

Asus Router Update - Jan 7th, 2018.

Was about to pull the trigger on one of the Highly-Recommended Router's by Asus, the RT-AC88U (2015 model?).

I checked CNET, and they had both the RT-AC88U & RT-AC86U models in their TOP 5 for 2018.

Then, went to Amazon to check Reviews + Tech Support + Warranty.

  1. Rated at only 3 Stars out of 5 - Major Problems has been with their "Unstable" Software Updates + #2 & #3 below.
  2. HUGE Warranty Issue - They do NOT list the usual Number of Months, in their Warranty Info. It States that it "depends" on the Region you live in! - - AND, there's another Wrinkle ... When there is a "issue or problem" that requires a RMA to send the Device for Technical Inspection, GUESS who pays for ALL the Shipping Costs?? --- AND, they do NOT Guarantee that they will Repair or Replace the $300+ USD Device.
  3. Same Warranty Info Notice is on their official website. READ Warranty details.
  4. Big Tech Support - Overall, bad communication with consumers, no followup to diagnosis or repairs. It's almost NON-existent.

THIS is something I did not expect from ANY Router device company. Just got Spoiled with Apple Care, over the years.

Check it out ...
