System Preferences -> Software Update doesn't work for me. I get a message:
"Unable to check for updates" "Make sure you are connected to the Internet"
However I am connected to the Internet. MacOS 10.14.2, 2018 Mac Mini.

If you are using a network monitoring program, make sure that "usr/libexec/trustd" is not blocked. It worked for me :)
Well, first, there are no newer updates for Mojave since 10.14.2. But, do you have Little Snitch or any antivirus programs installed? If so, uninstall them.
See if Software Update works while you are in Safe Mode.

I am well aware of that, earlier I mentioned to the OP that he could also look for macOS upgrades in Apple Support Downloads, and that app updates would be under the App Store Updates page.
What updates are you expecting, I gave you the Apple Support Downloads link so you could browse there if there was a particular update you were looking for. As you are on 10.14.2 I doubt there is an update anyway.
Have you tried restarting your Mac.
I am well aware of that, I was simply making a distinction between the two incase the OP was thinking that app updates were also now to be found under System Preferences> Software Upgrade They haven't said what the were expecting to find or if they were just curious.
To summarize, I have a new mac, I don't need any updates. I do want to verify that my Mac is functional before the warranty expires. When I run Software Update I should not get a message "Unable to check for updates" "Make sure you are connected to the Internet". I will work with Apple Support to resolve the issue as the Mac is still under warranty. I wanted to try here first as I was hoping to avoid a call to Support. Will post back here when I have a resolution.

FWIW, Software Updates and App Store updates are two different things.
Well it's good you were well aware but the question was specifically about "System Preferences -> Software Update".
Well, I suppose you should have mentioned they could check for updates on a developer's site. Just to be thorough.

If you are connected via wifi, try a cabled connection instead, it maybe your wifi signal is not robust enough to connect to Apple software upgrade servers. you can also search for macOS updates here, Apple - Support - Downloads the app updates will be available through the App Store Updates section.
