If it's a 1 inch (25mm) wide narrow slot it's for SD cards. You don't say what your model is - it looks as if onlly quite old models have this, not including Macbooks or relatively recent Macbook Pros. You've posted in the Macbook Pro forum, you signature says you have a 2015 or later Macbook, so not knowing exactly what Mac you have doesn't help.
Let's start by identifying the computer in question.
A 2015 MacBook or later does not have an HDMI port. It has a single USB-C port. and nothing else.

With that said, if its a narrow slot then it is very likely a SD memory card slot.
