iMac Pro Audio Crackling

I have an iMac Pro that experiences crackling audio, although I've had trouble pinning down exactly what causes it. It doesn't ever seem to happen immediately but rather over time. It's happened, for instance, when playing Fortnite but only after I've been playing for awhile (maybe >30 minutes). It happened listening to music via iTunes just this morning, after I'd been listening for about an hour. The speakers will crackle and the audio can skip backward by a second or so (which tells me it's not an audio cable problem or a problem with my external speakers).

Anyone else with weird crackling audio on an iMac Pro?

Hi Cj Shumate,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're experiencing some issues with the audio quality from your external speakers and the audio content jumping in playback position when this occurs. I can see why you'd reach out about this behavior; I'd like to help. I'd recommend that you start with the following steps to reset the NVRAM on your Mac: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

Since you mention this behavior happens intermittently and after 30 or more minutes; take some time to test for the behavior after the reset:

If you see the issue return, use these steps to start your Mac in safe mode and take some time to test again: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the issue seems resolved in safe mode, restart your Mac normally and test again.

I'd also recommend that you disconnect your external speakers and test for the behavior with the built-in speakers as well to further isolate the behavior.

Let me know what you find.

Best Regards.
