Apple TV 4K won't turn on Yamaha RX-V781 Receiver

I have a very simple setup:

Apple TV 4K <- HDMI -> Yamaha RX-V781 Receiver <- HDMI -> Panasonic TC-P60ST30 TV

If I have everything on, I can put the Apple TV to sleep (by holding the home button down on the Siri remote) and it turns both the TV and receiver off properly.

However, from an all-off state, waking up the Apple TV *only* turns on the TV. It does not turn on the receiver. The receiver is in HDMI pass-through so you can see the Apple TV screen, but there is no audio until I manually turn on the receiver.

Any suggestions for remedying this? I saw a couple of older threads where this problem was mentioned but have yet to see a solution.

Thanks in advance!

Its not just HDMI, you need HDMI ARC - Audio Return Channel to use power on/off. For example, I've got my Apple TV into my Onkyo TX-777 and TV connected to the receiver, both using HDMI ARC ports. When I use my Apple TV remote, it turns on the receiver and the TV. Sleep mode on the Apple TV shuts the Apple TV, Receiver and TV off.

Hi RM,

Thanks for the response. Allow me to clarify my setup:

Apple TV 4K <- HDMI 2.0a (CEC enabled) -> Yamaha RX-V781 Receiver <- HDMI 1.4a (CEC and ARC enabled) -> Panasonic TC-P60ST30 TV

ARC (audio return channel) is used for routing my TV's internal audio back to the Yamaha receiver for output through my surround speakers.

CEC (consumer electronics control) is the HDMI feature that is *supposed* to enable power on/off commands to propagate across all interconnected devices. However, CEC implementations can vary by manufacturer which may cause interoperability issues. I'm glad your combo of ATV/Onkyo seems to work, but not all configs work the same, and without the right sprinkling of CEC pixie dust there may be issues with certain commands not working.

I'm hoping to find someone that had and solved this issue with an ATV4K/Yamaha setup. From Googling, I've found plenty of folks that have the issue, but no one with a solution. It may be that there is none.

Regards,
