iPhone XR will not sync with up to date Mojave OS

My Mac states it has the latest version of Mojave when I try to update: 10.14.2 - - But when I try to sync my iPhone XR, I get 'A software update is required to connect your iPhone' then when I try to update, I get an installation failed error. Pls Help
