How do you unpair an Apple watch you no longer have?

About 4 months ago I sold my iPhone X and my Apple Watch. I used an Android device temporarily as part of a work related pilot programme.

I backed up my iPhone to iCloud and reset it (and turned off Find my iPhone), then I factory reset the Apple Watch and did the same.

Four months on I have purchased an iPhone XS, recovered my backup, and all is working well, aside from the Apple Watch app on my phone. I attempted to delete it, as I don't own an Apple watch and don't intend to purchase another one, however I am met with an error:

"To delete this app from the Home screen, un-pair any Apple Watch paired to your iPhone".

When I open the Apple Watch app, I am greeting with a screen asking me to choose between "Pair Existing Watch" or "Pair New Watch". Neither of these options do anything as,

A) I no longer own the previous Apple Watch

B) I don't own an Apple Watch

What do I do in order to get rid of the Apple Watch App without wiping my phone and negating the entire process of having an iCloud backup in the first place?

Thanks.

It appears your new iPhone found and loaded the configuration with Apple Watch from your old backup. Unfortunately this uncommon scenario was never included in the design and I can’t see any way to remove the watch from the backup or from the phone except, as you noted, to erase the phone and reload as a new phone without using the backup. I agree that would be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

The storage occupied by the Watch App will be trivial compared with available storage on the XS so it is unlikely to cause any problems. At worst it is a visual annoyance. If I had the same problem I would simply move (drag) the unwanted app to one of the less used pages of my home screen then ignore it. Sorry, I don’t think there is a better solution.

At this stage I think a larger hammer is required. Your new XS brings an entitlement top phone support direct from Apple’s paid support staff, hit (link) Contact Apple Support and pick your preferred method of contact. I usually use “Apple calls you back” to get a real human on the phone within a few minutes, but remember you might want to use a different phone if it is available so you can talk to Support and work on the XS at the same time.

I've spoken to Apple support and they themselves are stumped, so i was hoping the community could suggest a workaround of some sort.

I would be OK with just hiding the app from view in an obscure folder, however as a result of the orphaned Apple Watch I now have a permanent location services icon even with location services switched off (which others have complained about).

It seems my options are dwindling and that a total wipe is neccessary, which is a massive shame as i have been paying for iCloud for the last 4 months despite selling all my Apple hardware under the assumption that i would be able to restore when i eventually bought an iPhone again. Ahh!
