no wake up of iphone X screen when notifications arrive

I have an iphone X and Apple watch 1. The last 2 days I was away from my watch but even though I received text messages none of them wake up the screen of my phone so that I know they have arrived, but they are there if I wake up the phone manually. I have checked Settings/Notifications/Messages and there the settings are "Allow notifications" and all 3 alerts are chosen. What am I missing? Ususally I get an haptic reaction on the watch but this was nowhere near the phone. Shouldn't it show up on the screen even if the watch is nearby?

I switched the watch off, asked a colleague to send a message which arrived and the phone's screen woke up. I switched the watch back on, she sent a new message and this time I felt the watch vibrate but the phone did not wake up.

So, this is the way it is supposed to be. When both items are switched on the watch should vibrate while the phone's screen is dark and when the watch is off or too far away the phone's screen should light up. Wonder then why it did not work during Tuesday and Wednesday? Perhaps the watch just needed to be restarted once.

Hello.

This is how notifications work.

If you have Wrist Detection enabled on your watch, then:

  • if your iPhone is unlocked, you'll get notifications on your iPhone, instead of your Apple Watch
  • if your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked with your passcode.

If you turn off Wrist Detection in the Watch app, then all notifications will be delivered to both devices, BUT turning that off causes a lot of discomfort to your experience with Apple Watch. You no longer ca use Pay or achieve Stand goal in your Activity.

If you feel like you want to receive your notifications on both devices, feel free to submit a feedback to Apple using this form: Feedback - Apple Watch - Apple

Ok, I understand this, but if my watch was in another city or if my watch is turned off why do the notifications not wake up my screen on my phone? I thought the default was wake up the phone's screen but not if a watch was connected. If I do not touch my phone for a period of time and my watch is off or in another city I have no idea that I have received text messages until I actually pick up my phone.
