iMovie alternatives due to Mojave and 64-bit

I've been using the older version of iMovie (9) for many years, simply because it allows the creation of videos in 4.3 format. The later versions stripped this ability. I'm posting old videos, and I don't see the sense of greatly increasing their size for no actual benefit. Now, I'm researching the move to Mojave (I'm very conservative on this type of thing), and have confirmed that Mojave is the last version that will allow 32-bit apps such as the older iMovie.

So, it appears that my time using iMovie may be coming to a close. Any recommendations on alternatives (FCP is out, as it is severe overkill for what I'm doing)?

Hi,

I am not familiar with video editing programs other than iMovie so, regrettably, I am not able to make any recommendations. I suspect that there are some apps out there that are 64bit and can export in 4:3. Others may chime in if they know of any.

You are correct that iMovie 9 is a 32bit application that will no longer function when Apple upgrades from Mojave. The operating system upgrade will no longer support 32bit applications. Actually, iMovie 9 doesn't function even now on Mojave. It has been slowly fading away with each iteration of the operating system.

Current iMovie 10.1.10 is a 64bit application, so presumably it (or its update) will function with the future operating system upgrade to 64bit support only. While it is true that at present iMovie 10's 16:9 screen aspect ratio cannot be changed, you can edit and share out 4:3 aspect ratio media, although you will get black bars on each side to fill up the 16:9 screen.

Of course, you have the option not to upgrade past Mojave, thus avoiding the problem. Or, create a boot disk with an older operating system that you can use with iMovie 9.
