Apple CarPlay problem with 2019 Acura RDX and iPhone X

After connecting, successfully, my iPhone X to the RDX's infotainment unit, the connection repeatedly cuts off, only to re-connect some time later. I have changed cords, and the software on both the phone and the infotainment system are up to date.

Apple Car Play randomly showing itself to be "unavailable" when trying to connect, or randomly disconnecting itself while in use, are the only problems I've had, and neither one is specifically mentioned in this update, unless you count these two items:

  • Resolves the potential for CarPlay connection error message, when reconnecting an Apple CarPlay® device during ignition ON.
  • Resolves the potential for the Siri Eyes Free session to end prior to the user ending the session.

One could argue that the "connection error message" referred to above includes the "unavailable" message, but that seems a stretch, because it is limited to reconnects during ignition On (a limitation I don't think I fully understand). Also, it would seem that the reference to the "Siri Eyes Free" session refers only to the act of speaking to Siri while using CarPlay, not CarPlay in general.

So, in my case, the two issues do not appear to be resolved. And in fact, after installing the update, I had a random disconnect while driving. So I'm underwhelmed.

Found this on the web from an older post, might help?

"Have you followed all the steps here to ensure your iPhone X is set up properly to work with CarPlay? There may be a setting toggled on your wife's iPhone 7 that isn't turned on for your iPhone X. For example, be sure that Siri is turned on in Settings > Siri & Search. Also check out the "Get Help" section at the bottom of the article:

Also give the Acura / Honda Dealer a call, they might be of some help as well.

Updated iPhone 10xs to IOS 12.2 yesterday and had the same problem with 2019 Acura RDX CarPlay. I did a hard reset to iPhone, turned bluetooth off in settings, then turned back on, then turned off "apple pay cash" under wallet & apple pay in settings, then did another hard reset to iPhone, then turned "apple pay cash" back on. CarPlay worked perfect again! Not sure you need to do all those steps as I didn't try to reconnect to CarPlay in between the hard resets. I know there are issues with IOS 12.2 apple wallet and turning off "apple pay cash" then back on again seems to correct the problem. I'm guessing every time we update IOS on our iPhones we will experience some type of connection issue with CarPlay until Apple finds a permanent fix. Hope this helps!

Why do people not take the time to read the thread?

There are no serious or significant glitches, with the updated Acura Infotainment system.

I run it it at least 10 hours a day, with my iPhone 8. I have run it for a couple of days, with an iPhone X.

As I've said numerous times. If your system doesn't work:

  1. Clear out all the previous information (delete any profiles from the system).
  2. Get an APPLE or Apple approved USB cord.
  3. Do a "hard reset" of your phone.
  4. Do a "hard reset" of the system.
  5. Re-connect your iPhone.

Your ApplePlay will work. Perhaps perfeclyt, but 95% ... which is all I expect from my iPhone, when it's not connected to anything.

To every Acura owner whose CarPlay problems have apparently subsided: Apple has released IOS 13.4. Apparently it has two points relevant to CarPlay:

  • Third-party navigation app support for the CarPlay Dashboard
  • In-call information appears on the CarPlay Dashboard

Has anybody upgraded yet? I'm holding off because I've been stable for a good while after doing the Acura-recommended "Factory Reset."

Anyone? Anyone?

So I talked with Acura Customer Relations, again today.

They now admit the system if flawed, they can't make it work and of course, blamed it on their "3rd Party Supplier".

They have no idea when a fix will be ready, because they don't know what's wrong and have little or no control over their supplier.

I've told them I want them to buy the car back. I can't drive a vehicle without "handsfree" and I would never buy a vehicle, without CarPlay. Everyone else seems to make theirs work.

I've also filed a complaint with the NHTSA (attached).

I'm willing to coordinate a Class Action Lawsuit, if anyone is interested.

In case you haven't noticed, this is an Apple Discussion board. Apple monitors posts in real time and isn't shy about removing and/or editing posts they don't like.

Further, if you read the Non Disclosure Agreement with the PUBLIC Beta 13, you'll see that participants are not prohibited from talking about features Apple has already released to the general public.

I ran CarPlay all day today, from 8 am to 6 pm.

I had a couple of minor glitches, not all related to the Infotainment Center.

I got a "skip" in my music at one point, when my phone received a text. I don't think that was an Acura issue.

I was unable to get the trackpad to "end" a phone call. I made another 20 phone calls today, without any problems.

I had 2 "disconnects". Both times, when I looked at my iPhone, it wasn't showing that the phone was being "charged". I suspected it was a phone cord issue. The first time, I'm unplugged it and then re-plugged it in ... fixed. The 2nd time, I cleaned the contacts and had no further problem. I'm using a fairly new, official Apple Cord and still having intermittent plug issues. I'm convinced it's unrelated to Acura, because the iPhone "charging" indicator, blinks.

Again, I don't like the implementation of the "Messages". They seem to work find, I just don't like the way it works.

Other than the above, CarPlay worked flawlessly.

It's simple--see the attached page from the PDF version of the manual. Follow the steps for "Defaulting System Settings." The most complicated part is reestablishing the Bluetooth and CarPlay connections; resetting FM and XM station presets and audio preferences (equalizer, fader, volume setting for the Navigation instructions, etc); rearranging the icons on the home screen, etc. I can't say that it works. Others have indicated that it seems to work for a while. It my case, it has worked "so far."

I have the same issue. 2019 RDX and iPhone X iOS 12.1.4 with Apple car play that disconnects for no apparent reason. It does this in intervals and I noticed that the Acura link app pupup asking if “I’m safe” to use the app was coming up. Tried uninstalling the Acura Link app and it got better but still the same issie. This was happening before but after upgrading to 12.1.4 it got worse. Unable to use Apple car play because of this...Acura or Apple please fix this!

I also have this problem. I have tried all the solutions on my iPhone X and in my RDX infotainment system. Of course, my Acura dealer has no clue, and they may be right laying this malfunction on Apple. My next step is to try my wife’s iPhone 8 to see if the problem persists. Does anyone know if this is also a problem with the new members of the iPhone X family?
