Apple CarPlay problem with 2019 Acura RDX and iPhone X

After connecting, successfully, my iPhone X to the RDX's infotainment unit, the connection repeatedly cuts off, only to re-connect some time later. I have changed cords, and the software on both the phone and the infotainment system are up to date.

I fiinally fixed the Apple CarPlay issues my wife was having with her 2019 Acura RDX and her iPhone 8. After following all the ideas on this page, my nearly identical phone worked, and hers did not.

I went into the phone profiles in the car’s CarPlay settings, and there were two profiles for her phone. I deleted them (along with all unneeded profiles created by the dealer test drives, etc.) and her phone works flawlessly.

I also recommend naming your phone something other than the default “iPhone” in the general settings.

I have had this problem since day one with this car and Iphone X. It's not just Apple's problem. I've used my phone on other vehicles flawlessly, like 2 different Nissan Rogue rental cars. No cut outs, no problems whatsover. I come back to my 19 RDX and it cuts out every few minutes. Acura has been no help. There is clearly something amiss with their software, or at least a combination of their software and Apple's that maybe some other manufacturers are experiencing also. Apple really needs to help figure this out. This is getting very old.

So I talked with Acura Customer Relations, again today.

They now admit the system if flawed, they can't make it work and of course, blamed it on their "3rd Party Supplier".

They have no idea when a fix will be ready, because they don't know what's wrong and have little or no control over their supplier.

I've told them I want them to buy the car back. I can't drive a vehicle without "handsfree" and I would never buy a vehicle, without CarPlay. Everyone else seems to make theirs work.

I've also filed a complaint with the NHTSA (attached).

I'm willing to coordinate a Class Action Lawsuit, if anyone is interested.

BrianL9999. Too bad that you found iOS 13 does not fix the issue !

Yes I have gotten plenty of those fake system update notices as well. As MACThornhill said, I too have stopped using CarPlay as well, too many disconnects. I just use Bluetooth as well.

The case I opened with Acura about this got moved to an “escalation manager”. I talked to him at length today but he was really no help.

They don’t seem to want to send out any communications to us about this. I pointed out that people are buying this car not knowing the CarPlay is not working. He said that there’s some fine print somewhere in the documentation when you buy the car that talks about is not their responsibility if CarPlay is not working because it is an Apple product.

He said they were they are aware of the problem and are working on it but no idea if and when it will be fixed.

So yes I agree the whole situation is pretty unacceptable.

Today I drove my 2019 RDX for this first time after an automatic iOS update to my iPhone 6s and CarPlay wouldn't work. It's the first time I've had issues with it since I bought the vehicle last December, and after reading this, it sounds like I've been fortunate until today.

It sounds like Acura and Apple know about it and it's not priority enough to get it fixed yet, though. So many cars are purchased after reading reviews online today. Have you tried posting reviews of your vehicles to your dealer websites? Perhaps that would get dealers to put pressure on a fix if they were going to feel it in sales. 2020s will be out soon, too.

I'm going to my dealer tomorrow to have them look at it. I'll see what they say they know about the problem and what they are doing about it.

I saw there was a new Acura Infotainment system update D.1.1.4 showing up this morning. I called Acura but they could not give me any info about the update. In the past updates last February and December there was an email I got telling what the update was supposed to fix. But I have not received any email yet about this update. Has anyone else tried installing this update. If so I am wondering if it fixes the CarPlay disconnect issue ?

I did the Infotainment update on Wednesday. Since then I have used CarPlay for about 90 minutes and it did disconnect once on me. Will try it more over the next few days. I have iPhone XS with iOS 12.4.1.

Also I tried Bluetooth music from my iPhone as well and did run into an issue where the Infotainment system would not let me switch back to the radio. Had to turn off car to reset it. Tried that several other times and it did let me switch back to the radio those times so hopefully that was a one time issue.
