Apple CarPlay problem with 2019 Acura RDX and iPhone X

After connecting, successfully, my iPhone X to the RDX's infotainment unit, the connection repeatedly cuts off, only to re-connect some time later. I have changed cords, and the software on both the phone and the infotainment system are up to date.

I fiinally fixed the Apple CarPlay issues my wife was having with her 2019 Acura RDX and her iPhone 8. After following all the ideas on this page, my nearly identical phone worked, and hers did not.

I went into the phone profiles in the car’s CarPlay settings, and there were two profiles for her phone. I deleted them (along with all unneeded profiles created by the dealer test drives, etc.) and her phone works flawlessly.

I also recommend naming your phone something other than the default “iPhone” in the general settings.

Do believe what you're told my mechanics and technicians in Acura Dealerships, nor what you're told by Acura Customer Support ... they don't have the story and probably never will.

Yes, the system was being over-loaded, with the early releases of the software Acura uses. It's not propriety Acura software and other vehicles that use the system, were also affected.

Since the iOS update to 13 and the Acura update 2 weeks ago, the system is perfectly serviceable and I use it every day, without significant issues. I suppose I could be characterized as a "power user", as I do use the system for all it's capabilities and use it constantly (both my iPhone and CarPlay). As I've said before, I'll settle for about 95% performance from my iPhone and the same with my computer and Infotainment Center.

Since the iOS 13 upgrade, I'd give my iPhone a 97% and the Acura Infotainment Center, a 92%.

The Acura CarPlay IS working and working reasonably well. The few issues I've had, are not related to "over-loading" and my system hasn't "crashed" or re-booted since the Acura update.

I downloaded iOS 13 on my iPhone several days ago. For me CarPlay disconnected 3 out of the 9 times I have driven my 2019 Acura since then. When it happens, it is within the first couple of minutes, the phone stops charging and there is no way to get it to connect again, unplugging the cable again on the the lightening port side or the USB side does no good, eventually it connects by itself after about 5 minutes. This is with a new cable and the cable is tightly connected on both sides, I also tried deleting the Acura CarPlay profile and that did not help.

I continue to think this is a bug in the Infotainment system that Acura will need to get fixed. Some people may not have the problem, but a lot of us do. As described by others, it is as if the Infotainment system processes get overwhelmed and disconnects CarPlay.

I will be calling Acura client relations on Monday to complain once again. I too joined the class action lawsuit about this.

By the way, Album art over Bluetooth does not work either, even though CarPlay supports it in iOS 13, which is yet another disappointment.

We’re all in the same boat (car?) which is why we have this page we can use to complain. Others on this forum have mentioned that when the issue was raised with Acura, they’ve been told that Acura is working on a fix that will be ready “before the end of the year.”

It is an Acura problem, though they may need Apple to help solve it. A number of us have mentioned that when we use our phones and cables in a rental car, there were no problems with CarPlay. That was the case for me.

I know no one wants to hear this, but my ApplePlay works GREAT.

I'm in my car at least 8 hours a day and hardly ever have a glitch. The worse that happens, is if I bump the cord, I might get a momentary disconnect. Other than that, it works awesome.

I typically use an iPhone 8, but I ran my daughter's iPhone X all day today, with the same results. The system is awesome.

I'll admit to having plenty of glitches prior to the last Acura update and Apple Release of iOS 13, but it's been great since. The only thing I can recommend to those having problems, is to reset everything and get a 1st class lightening connection. The Apple cord is good, but not really top quality in my opinion. I use a cord I got from Amazon, made by "Cable Creation". It's a dual-purpose cord, in that it also has a mini-usb connector.

I called my Acura dealer this summer to complain and the service person asked me what was Apple Carplay? My 2019 RDX only works intermittently - I am using a genuine cord that came with my IPhone. It seems to work for a longer period of time if you connect the phone to the car before you start it. Doing so afterwards is almost always an issue. This is crazy - my daughter's Hyundai Elentra always connects - Acura please fix this issue.

I continue to get CarPlay disconnects after I upgraded iOS 13.2.2, it typically disconnects after 4 minutes, there is no way to get it to connect again unless you either turn the car off and back on, or wait about 5 minutes and it usually connects again.

I see the same behavior as Leo posted on the weekend with the YouTube video created (https://youtu.be/xBhfsbVK_**). I shared that video with Acura client support when I called them yesterday. Thanks again for the video Leo !

As I mentioned in my post over the weekend I’ve tried all the fixes, deleting CarPlay profiles, deleting Bluetooth profile, rebooting Infotainment system. Rebooting my iPhone. None of them work for me.

What I’ve seen in the past is when CarPlay disconnects the USB port stops charging. I have not checked this recently.

For me turning Wi-Fi on and off every time we get in the car is asking too much.

For those of us that are still having this CarPlay disconnect problems please call Acura client support and let them now. That way they’ll realize the problem still exists for some of us.

I’ve been dealing with Acura Client Relations for several months now and they escalated to a case manager last week. She has been in touch with me almost every day to gather additional info. Yesterday she called to schedule to have service tech inspect the car this coming Monday. Since these issues are very intermittent, I hope they’re able to reproduce the issue.

Regardless, as others have mentioned, the only way they know that these issues exist is if we tell them. We also have to continuously stay on top of them until they come up with a resolution.

I have an Acura 2020 RDX and have the same CarPlay disconnect issue, it's not limited to 2019 models. I installed the Acura OTA software update to version D.1.2.1 and it seemed to help for about a day but the issue came right back. It's the same as before, disconnects after about 5 minutes and if I leave it plugged in it will reconnect - which lasts for about 4 - 8 minutes. I'm running iOS 13.2.2 and still have the issue. It seemed to initially pop up after upgrading to iOS 13 as I didn't seem to have it under iOS 12, but I also didn't have my RDX very long before upgrading to iOS 13.

This is extremely frustrating. CarPlay is awesome when it works, but the disconnect issue is constant and makes the system unusable. This shouldn't happen with a car this expensive and an iPhone X.

I just got off the phone, again, with Acura tech support. I was reminded that page 304 of the owners manual for my 2019 RDX states that Honda cannot and does not offer any warranty regarding CarPlay functionality or performance. Whether that holds up in court is an open question. In my case, after months of intermittent drop-offs (almost always at the 5-minute mark), I was again asked to replace the cord, reset the audio system to manufacturer defaults and try it with WiFi off -- none of which suggests that they have any idea of what's wrong.

After nearly a year of struggling with my 2020 RDX and Iphone XS Max with repeated carplay disconnects reconnects and disconnects, trying new cables, updating the InfoTainment system, resetting my phone. I finally solved the problem. I bought an Android Phone. It has been working seamlessly for over a week and Android Auto actually seems to be a better interface, where google maps leverages my HUD with turn by turn directions. I am still transitioning from an Iphone to an Android, but the carplay issues are gone.

To every Acura owner whose CarPlay problems have apparently subsided: Apple has released IOS 13.4. Apparently it has two points relevant to CarPlay:

  • Third-party navigation app support for the CarPlay Dashboard
  • In-call information appears on the CarPlay Dashboard

Has anybody upgraded yet? I'm holding off because I've been stable for a good while after doing the Acura-recommended "Factory Reset."

Anyone? Anyone?
