How do I add my own tracks?

Hi There,

I'm a song writer but each time I try to add my own tracks I receive the following error:

"iCloud Music Library playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud Music Library."

I've added the track by choosing File > Add to library, then dragging the imported track onto a play list so it syncs to my phone.

Why has iTune become so mind-numbingly complicated (it's just music for Gods sake) and how do you play your own music on your devices these days?

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Cheers

When you have a network connection you may be able to right-click individual tracks and Add to iCloud Music Library. If that doesn't work tell us what you see in the iCloud Status column for those tracks. Once the tracks have been matched or uploaded you can then download to your iPhone.

Edit: sorry, when I wrote this for some reason the question was appearing without the other replies, looks like this has already been covered above.

Try opening iTunes and doing File > Library > Update iCloud Music Library before adding the tracks to a playlist.

If you're using iCloud Music Library, iTunes (and Music.app on your iOS devices) expects the songs in your playlists to be streamable by iCloud, so they are able to play on all your devices. It sounds like the track you're trying to play is stored locally on your Mac, but you're trying to add it to a playlist which is synced by iCloud.

I have had iTunes Match since launch, so all of my music is on iCloud, so I can't replicate the issue. However, you can turn off iCloud Music Library in iTunes > Preferences > General > iCloud Music Library. This should allow you to add your track to a playlist which you can manually sync to your phone, but your playlists won't automatically sync across other devices.

  1. It should normally happen automatically, but you cannot use a track elsewhere until it is successfully matched or uploaded.
  2. Yes, if iCloud Music Library is enabled transfer is only by way of the cloud for music.
  3. Again, should happen automatically. You make a smart playlist to capture anything with errors so you try adding that again.
  4. We're fellow users. We cannot speak for Apple. I would suggest things are slightly easier for those who have all you can eat 24/7 network connections.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

It has a dotted cloud but the explanations don't make much sense as iCloud Music Library is turned on but 'Update iCloud Music Library' is greyed out.

I'm travelling so worry that if you don't have reliable internet, you can't copy a track onto a phone via USB - which is the whole point of copying a track via USB, no internet!

Music on the Mac has become so complex - and I can administer a linux server from the command line for God's sake!

I have internet now and the track has a dotted cloud, so it's not in iCloud music library. Have manually added it.

Questions:

1.

Do you have to manually add each track to iCloud before you can use it on other devices?

2.

Does iCloud Music Library 'lock' your devices so you can't add tracks by any other means?

3.

Is there a way to have tracks go to iCloud automatically when added to iTunes?

4.

Is anyone at Apple focused on the simple joy of listening to music, or is it all about features, restrictions and complexity?

Cheers
