I opened my FCP recently and found that many of my previous (older) produced projects have many "missing proxy" signs. What does that mean ?
I am on
mac OS Mojave 10.14.2
FCP 10.4.4.
The proxies have probably been deleted and need to be recreated. Run the transcode function again.
You're seeing this icon in the viewer? Switch the viewer preferences in the upper right to Play original/optimized. If you're seeing it somewhere else, post a screenshot.
One of these has to be clicked on to activate the process. I am "experimenting with a shorter clip now and I see it is taking a long time. I presume it also adds to higher data. Since I have "finished" productions saved on external drive, i will be running out of space pretty soon. Is that corrects?

My question is connected to "surprise" to see these proxy icons - haven't open FCP for a while. You explained well what to do about it. It is true that I might not need to transcode.
However I have some longer footage uploaded into FCP from which I take only shorter clips out and produce as separate pieces for YouTube or Vimeo. All of those partially used longer footage has now this proxy icon.

or
create proxy media
or both? Don't know the difference
I have no idea what your system setup is. If you've finished the production you most likely no longer any optimized or proxy files and can delete any to already have.

If you need proxies check opt proxy media. Optimized media is high data rate production files. Maybe you don't need either optimized or proxies.
