Photos slow when editing raw

Photos is very slow when editing raw images.

Using the light and colour sliders is very laggey.

Sometimes when editing photos they go completly black this happens intermitantly and is not permanant. The app occasionaly crashes.

The more editing i do the slower it gets.

When using the app without editing it seems to run ok.

The screen saver ocaasionaly struggles to find any photos.

My photo library is stored on the internal hardrive of the macine which is running the latest version of High sierra as i cannot update to Mojave.

I have around 16 000 photos in the library around hald of which are in RAW format.

I will post an etre check report.

Any ideas or help greatly appreciated

I see none of the usual suspects in the report that would point to why it runs slow in the editing situation. How big are these RAW files? What camera model are they from?

Where are the RAW images located? If on an external HD how is that drive formatted and connected to your iMac?

Launch Activity Monitor and watch the memory graph while you edit and see if you the memory pressure gets out of the green area:

Unless it gets way up into the yellow/red area you shouldn't be worried about memory.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and do some editing from there. Is there any change in performance?

Do you have a 3rd party editor that can edit RAW image files to see if it experiences the same problem?

Jan 14, 2019 11:27 PM in response to Old Toad

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

The RAW images are stored on the internal hard drive. which has two partitions. (Mac OS Extended Journaled)

Memory always stays within the green area.

Booting into safe mode the issue is much worse if i try to edit a photo i imediatly get a beach ball which persists for a long period of time.

I dont have any third party editors, any suggestions.

Thanksonce again for your help.

The answer is there in the log:

Heavy RAM usage - This machine is using a large amount of RAM.

Out of RAM - This machine is running short on RAM and has a mechanical hard drive, reducing the speed of the virtual memory system.

Your 2011 machine is struggling to manage the processes necessary to edit RAW pictures; in other words, it can only run in second gear when it needs to be in fifth. It's possible to free-up RAM. https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/free-memory-ram-mac-3681038/
